Congratulations to our Northwest Region Teacher of the Year!

Darcy Grimes, Watauga County -- Bethel Elementary School

grimes_watauga.jpg

Mrs. Grimes has been teaching for five years and is currently seeking her master's degree in Instructional Technology at Appalachian State University. She enjoys coaching volleyball, basketball, and Bethel's first running club.

Congratulations to our Northwest Region Principal of the Year!

Kelly Withers, Rowan-Salisbury -- Jesse Carson High School

withers_rss.jpg

Withers received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science in 1997 from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master’s Degree in School Administration in 2006 from Gardner Webb University.

Withers began her career at RSS by serving as a high school science teacher at West Rowan High School in 2000 and then moved into the position of Assistant Principal at Carson High School in 2006 when the school opened under Principal Henry Kluttz. Withers attributed much of her success as a principal to Kluttz’s leadership, “Working and learning under Henry Kluttz made things easier to transition into the principalship,” stated Withers.

Siemens STEM Academy Offers Teachers Free Professional Development Opportunities for Summer 2012

URL: http://siemensstemacademy.com/index.cfm?event=showSTEMApplication&landing=1

The Siemens STEM Academy announces two professional development opportunities for middle and high school educators (those who teach a STEM subject in grades 6-12). These experiences are designed to bolster STEM learning and help participants develop skills that can be used in the classroom. See below for descriptions about these two all-expenses-paid programs:

(a) Siemens STEM Institute (July 29 - August 3, 2012)

Do you want to learn new digital tools and technologies that can boost learning in the classroom? Do you want to engage with top STEM leaders and scientists and experience behind-the-scenes access of national STEM institutions? The Siemens STEM Institute selects 50 middle and high school educators to attend a week at Discovery's world headquarters outside of Washington, D.C. Participating teachers will learn about hands-on STEM integration in the classroom, take field trips to leading institutions to observe real-world STEM applications at leading STEM institutions, and network and engage with STEM leaders and peers from across the nation.

(b) Siemens Teachers as Researchers (STARs)

Have you ever wanted to be part of a scientific research team? Have you ever wanted to bring the excitement of authentic research into the classroom? STARs gives middle and high school STEM educators the opportunity to spend two weeks engaging with top scientists and researchers on short-term mentored research projects at one of the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratories. Twenty educators will be work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee (June 17-29, 2012), while another twenty will be work at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington (July 8-20, 2012).

Visit http://siemensstemacademy.com/index.cfm?event=showSTEMApplication&landing=1 for more information about these free professional development experiences. The deadline to apply is February 9. Please direct any questions to siemensstemacademy@discovery.com

Newton-Conover Announces Collaborative Arts PLC Meetings for Spring

Collaborative Arts PLC on Thursday, January 26th at 3:30 at the ASU Center at Hickory (formerly Hickory Metro Higher Ed Center). All arts teachers in Region 7 are invited to participate.

We will spend our meeting time digging into the new Essential Standards and creating curriculum maps. In particular, we'll focus on the "Cultural Relevancy" strand. This strand requires arts teachers to incorporate cultural context, geography, and history into their instruction.

In order to dig deeply into these standards and share resources for teaching them, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Our goal is to work in small job-alike groups focused on music, dance, visual arts, and theatre arts. We hope that you'll join us!

Another topic of interest for this year is exploring sample artifacts that arts teachers can use to demonstrate proficiency on the new teacher evaluation instrument. That will be our topic for the March 22nd meeting.

If you haven't joined our wiki, click here to join. On the wiki, you'll find minutes from our meetings, lots of shared resources, and contact information for other arts teachers. We have plans for growing the wiki throughout this school year.

Go ahead and mark your calendar for these meeting dates: January 26th, March 22nd, and May 31st. Those meetings will be held at 3:30 at the ASU Center at Hickory (formerly Hickory Metro Higher Education Center) on Highway 70.

I hope to see you on January 26th! Please contact Jayme Linton if you have any questions. Her contact information is below.

Twitter Chat: eSchool News & ASCD discuss Common Core State StandardsJanuary 19, 2012 at 1 p.m. ET

Join eSchool News and ASCD, the global leader in providing programs, products, and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner, for a Twitter chat about the Common Core State Standards.

ASCD is an endorsing partner of the common core initiative. ASCD believes the newer, higher standards will require schools and communities to better and more comprehensively support student learning if students are to meet these enhanced expectations. ASCD also believes that for the common core standards to succeed and have maximum effect, they also need to be part of a well-rounded, whole child approach to education that ensures students are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.

Join David Griffith, ASCD director of policy, and Efrain Mercado, lead strategist, Common Core State Standards for ASCD and eSchool News Editor Dennis Pierce to learn more about:

  • Common Core State Standards
  • How the Common Core can be used to support the Whole Child
  • What is next for Common Core

To participate, send your questions for ASCD and eSchool News to @eschoolnews and use the hashtag #esnedchat. If you don't follow eSchool News on Twitter, you can do so here.
